Jennifer Russell, owner of Carolina Farm and Garden Center in Norwood, describes the four most popular varieties grown by many gardeners in the state.
1. Kennebec: These are the most popular potato variety in the area. A large white potato with a tan skin, Kennebecs come up last in the planting season. They make a good baking potato, as well as french fries and mashed potatoes.
2. Yukon Gold: A yellow potato, this medium-sized potato is good for boiling, baking, and making french fries.
3. Pontiac Red: They have a red skin and are smaller than most potatoes. They come up first and are a good choice to have in stews
4. Irish Cobbler: While not as popular as the first three, Irish Cobbler is a large white potato. They can be used in stew and are also good for baking.
