Old Salem Museums & Gardens’ 2012 Fall Gardening Workshops

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (SEPTEMBER 4, 2012) – Old Salem Museums & Gardens is offering an extensive range of gardening workshops this fall. Non-perishable food items will be collected at each workshop and donated to the Second Harvest Food Bank.

All events are free and last approximately one hour. For noon sessions, guests are encouraged to bring lunch. Coffee and iced tea will be provided. To register for a workshop or for questions please call 336-721-7357, or visit: www.oldsalem.org/gardens.

Fall Lawn Care

Tuesday, September 11, noon (bring lunch), Free

Location: Frank L. Horton Museum Center, 924 S. Main St.

Learn the basics of lawn care from a technical perspective: fertilizing, liming, seeding, and mowing. Presented by Bill Colvin, Master Gardener, Forsyth County. Attendees may bring their lunch; coffee and iced tea will be provided.

Herbal Tea Making

Saturday, September 15, 10 a.m., Free

Location: Single Brothers’ Workshop, 10 W. Academy St.

Discover how to use your own herbs to create simple, great tasting, and healing teas. Presented by Elizabeth Morgan, Herbalist and Owner of Dandelion Soap & Herb Shop, Walkertown. Dandelion Soap & Herb Shop products will be for sale.

All About Lavender

Saturday, Sept. 29, 10 a.m., Free

Location: Single Brothers’ Workshop, 10 W. Academy St.

Explore everything about this ancient herb, prized for its fragrance, color, and beauty. How to grow, harvest, craft, and taste lavender. Presented by Sandra Sarlinga, Manager of Sunshine Lavender Farm, Orange County. Sunshine Farm products will be for sale.

Native Plants for Triad Gardens

Tuesday, October 2, noon (bring lunch), Free

Location: Frank L. Horton Museum Center, 924 S. Main Street

Use native plants to the best advantage for gardening. Presented by Vicki Hodges, Master Gardner, Forsyth County. Attendees may bring their lunch; coffee and iced tea will be provided.

“Today’s Special--Chestnuts”

Saturday, Oct. 6, 10 a.m., Free

Location: Single Brothers Workshop, 10 West Academy Street

Learn about the American Chestnut tree, the blight-resistant Dustan Hybrid, and High Rock Farm Chestnut Orchard. Sample chestnut flour cake. Roast fresh chestnuts! Presented by Richard Teague, owner of High Rock Farm, Rockingham County. High Rock Farm products will be for sale. Limited Space.

Cooking with Herbs
